Background of the Study
Informal sector workers form a significant portion of the workforce in Nigeria and are often exposed to numerous occupational hazards that compromise their health and safety. In Aba North Local Government Area, Abia State, workers in informal industries face risks such as chemical exposure, physical injuries, and ergonomic stressors due to unregulated work environments (Okoro, 2023). The lack of regulatory oversight, inadequate protective measures, and limited access to occupational health services further exacerbate these hazards (Chukwu, 2024). This study seeks to evaluate the extent to which occupational hazards impact the health of informal sector workers by analyzing both acute and chronic health outcomes. Through comprehensive assessment of workplace conditions and socio-economic factors, the research aims to inform targeted interventions and policy reforms to improve safety standards and safeguard worker well-being (Eze, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Informal sector workers in Aba North face significant health risks due to unregulated occupational hazards (Ude, 2023). Exposure to harmful substances, unsafe work environments, and inadequate protective measures result in acute injuries and long-term health complications. The absence of formal occupational health policies leaves these workers vulnerable, undermining their productivity and quality of life. This study seeks to quantify the risks and examine the impact of these hazards on worker health, thereby highlighting the urgent need for improved safety standards and regulatory interventions (Okafor, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To identify the occupational hazards faced by informal sector workers.
To assess the health impacts of these hazards.
To recommend strategies for mitigating occupational risks in the informal sector.
Research Questions:
What occupational hazards are prevalent among informal sector workers in Aba North?
How do these hazards affect the health of workers?
What interventions can effectively reduce occupational health risks?
Research Hypotheses:
Informal sector workers face significant occupational hazards that adversely affect their health.
Exposure to occupational hazards is positively correlated with the incidence of work-related illnesses.
Implementation of safety measures will reduce the health risks among informal sector workers.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the occupational hazards affecting informal sector workers in Aba North. The findings will inform policymakers and stakeholders about the critical need for improved safety standards and regulatory measures, ultimately enhancing the health and productivity of workers in the informal sector (Adamu, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
Occupational hazards: Risks or dangers associated with the workplace.
Informal sector: Economic activities not regulated by formal labor laws.
Occupational health: The discipline focused on the safety and well-being of workers.
